The annual Spirits of Mexico Festival, North America’s largest celebration of agave-based spirits, launches this year with a new event, the Tequila Trail, Sunday, Sept. 11. With a $25 Tequila Trail ticket, Mexican cuisine connoisseurs and tequila lovers will start the week-long fiesta off with a bang from 3:00 - 6:00 pm as they blaze through the streets of Old Town San Diego.

Sponsored by Vitzo Bacanora Cream and 91x radio station, the 2011 Tequila Trail includes stops at 10 of Old Town’s world-renowned eateries. Barra Barra Saloon, Café Coyote, Miguel’s Cocina, Old Town Mexican Café, El Fandango, The Cosmopolitan, Casa Guadalajara, La Pinata, Rockin’ Baja Coastal Cantina and Fiesta de Reyes will offer up tastes of their signature dishes accompanied with Herradura, Chinaco, Milagro, El Jimador, Arta, Fortaleza, Tres Agave and 1519 Tequilas; Scorpion, Maria, Mijes and Oro de Oaxaca Mezcals; Casa ZG Sangrita, Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur, and Vitzo.

The Tequila Trail is also the scene of the Solerno Liqueur Cocktail Challenge Semi-Finals at The Cosmopolitan Restaurant. The semi-finals will narrow down the field as top mixologists, bartenders and drinking establishments stir, shake, blend and pour their best creations using Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur and battle to have their drink dubbed the “2011 Official Spirits of Mexico Cocktail.”

At the Tequila Trail’s end, three after parties will ensue, keeping the fête alive and the energy going throughout the week. Tequila Herradura will be featured at Fiesta de Reyes’ after party, Tequila Milagro at Casa Guadalajara’s and Tequila Chinaco at Café Coyote’s. After parties require an additional $10 admission.

The 2011 Tequila Trail launches the Spirits of Mexico Festival, a comprehensive multi-day and multi-faceted event taking place September 11 to 18. From tequila tastings to cocktail challenges to fine-dining set in historic Old Town San Diego, Spirits of Mexico will also feature an awards ceremony, seminars focusing on the world of agave-based drinks, challenges, and a lobster excursion to Mexico to close off the festival.
